Swimming with the Dolphins

January 8, 2010

Without question, dolphins are the most admirable underwater friends.  Most travelers to the Caribbean find themselves wanting a chance to swim with these aquatic wonders, so while in Bermuda, you would feel nothing but lifelong regret if you did not try your feet on one or two of these ocean dwelling mammals.

A native of Bermuda, the bottle nose dolphin is one of the world’s brainiest of creatures in existence.  Always bubbly and friendly with a mischevious playfulness, they have found their way into people’s hearts.  Interested in making a dorsal finned companion on your vacation in the Caribbean?  Point the wheels toward Dolphin Quest, the company which provides a personal introduction to these underwater friends.  While in the area, be sure to check out the Docklands, a tourist specific area teeming with restaurants, vibrant stores, and some of the largest cruise ships you’ll ever see.  On top of that, you can visit the Maritime Museum, where Dolphin Quest is based.  Ely and Bailey will be your two main bottle nosed companions, as they head up a good sized pod of dolphins who let you join in their playtime.  Either in the water kicking around with them, or above the surface watching the shows for the more squeamish around unfamiliarly shaped geniuses, you can enjoy their showmanship and playfulness as you watch them escape the limits of the water into the air, or even toss a pigskin around.  Much like meeting the stars of a play, after the show you can go shake hands — err, fins –  with the dolphins while on the dock.

Want to get closer?  Jump on in the water, where you and a few other participants can swim alongside the dolphins.  You will receive a lot of attention from the dolphins and a lot of memories playing around with them.  Agile and fast, you will have to work hard to keep up with them, plunging low in to the water and darting upwards to shallow areas.  Play tag, dance, and even plant two lips on their elongated beaks if they allow it, and if you understand it’s just a friendly peck.

You will have a different experience based on your exposure package; a few orders provide you with the opportunity to feed the dolphins.  You can also have the chance to act as their trainer for the duration of a full week, allowing a holiday experience of a lifetime.  The only downside to the entire experience is having to say goodbye, as you may not be willing to return to a dolphinless world.

It is not an entire loss when you leave, as those working with the dolphins photograph your entire experience and provide guests an unforgettable souvenir, available on the company website.  This unique and wonderful experience is a fascinating and exciting way to enjoy the holidays in the Caribbean.  With the opportunity to enjoy dolphins with more than just your eyes, you can find pleasure in playing with a new underwater friend.  With a friendly spirit and an open heart, no other creature in nature will embrace you in similar ways as a dolphin, and there is no better way to find out how true that is than by stepping in its environment and swimming in its world.
