Eating Brazilian in Sao Paulo Brazil

February 8, 2010

Sao Paulo is known for two things: Business and food.  And even if you’re not in Sao Paulo on business, you will be needing food when you’re there.  Rather than get into all the delectable international cuisine you can gorge yourself on during your visit, this article will focus on Brazilian food, which itself is the product of international mixing between Europe, Africa, and South America.

For the uninitiated, there’s only two things you need to know: The Churrascaria and the Kilo restaurants.  First, the churrasca.  You may already know this dining option as it has become standard dining in bigger cities.  This is the Brazilian Barbeque.  As it is a buffet, you will need to bring your appetite.  Waiters dressed in white circulate among patrons’ tables bearing long metal skewers of barbequed beef, pork, chicken, chicken hearts, and more cuts of beef, pork, and chicken.  Not for vegetarians, right?  Well, you might get strange looks, but even if you don’t eat the meat you can walk away well-fed as churrascas also feature a bountiful salad bar.  From lettuce and greens to beans to more exotic offerings, the salad bar does okay as a stand-alone dining option.  Note that churrascarias come in fancy and plain and you can expect to pay accordingly.  The more expensive establishments do tend to offer better quality food, so head there if you are a food snob.

Another Brazilian dining joint I am going to tell you about is the “kilo” restaurant.  This is more of a lunchtime option, one which workaholic Paulistanos.

know well and love.  At these dining venues, you fill up your plate from the assortment of local dishes on offer such as feijoada, then get your plate weighed and pay based on how much you took.  In this way, it’s kind of the antithesis of the buffet-style churrsca as there’s no pressure to eat until you burst.  That is, unless your eyes are bigger than your stomach and you invariably take more food than you can eat!  Ah, well, enjoy the wonderful tastes that Brazil offers.
