Berlin City Breaks Guide

March 15, 2010

Berlin is truly unique among German cities and for that matter, world cities as well. Blighted by war and literally split into pieces, its history mirrors that of Central and Eastern Europe in the twentieth century. Now a twenty four hour world city, it is an exciting and atmospheric place to visit. Berlin city breaks or short stop holidays can today be safely enjoyed by travellers from all over the world.

Berlin’s current status as an anything goes party sort of town has it’s roots in the dark days of the cold war when West Berlin, placed firmly in the middle of old East Germany attracted all sorts of artists, hedonists and those seeking an alternative lifestyle.

Getting Around

Berlin’s underground system is called the U-Bahn, and as you would expect, is quick efficient and perfect for getting around central Berlin and the surrounding suburbs. For longer distances such as out of town visits, the S-Bahn is more practical.

Accommodation

Booking ahead when travelling to Berlin (especially the western part) is strongly advised as accommodation can be extremely hard to find at short notice. If arriving in the city without any hotels booked, you would be advised to visit the Europa Center who should be able to find you accommodation for a small fee.

Bar and Nightlife

Berlin is crawling with bars and nightclubs. The city is also home to numerous quality restaurants, most of which are quite reasonably priced. Western Berlin has the best nightspots with Winterfeldplatz and Nollendorfplatz offering all night good times and beer flowing until dawn for those who fancy it. The eastern part of the city doesn’t offer quite the same range of night spots, but is growing in popularity with the young and student population of the city.

Berlin is a real late-night city and all night clubs feature in Schoneberg and Kreuzberg districts.

So if you are after a frenetic and exciting city break or short holiday, why not try Berlin?
